While developers are still responsible for verifying the accuracy of the generated documentation, the initial writing is handled by the AI. The language itself comes with no if, loops, switch, macros, etc. However, the few constructs that qdbp does have, along with its unified syntax, can compose to form higher level abstractions(like if, loops, switch, defer, monads, domain specific languages, etc). A few key points: - qdbp is statically typed and types are fully inferred, meaning there are no type definitions or annotations - The language uses prototype based OOP centered around anonymous records and polymorphic variants. Show HN: We built a ClickHouse-based logging service Hey hn! I'm one of the co-founders of highlight.io, an open source monitoring tool. Today we're sharing a ClickHouse-based logging solution we've been working on. We wanted to showcase how we built it and share how you could try it out to give feedback. Since we started working on highlight.io, we've been hyper-focused on "cohesion", or ensuring that when you install your monitoring stack, all of the resources in that stack (user interactions, requests, traces, logs, etc.) are connected in a consumable way. We've written up more about our philosophy on this here [1]. We started building towards this by connecting your client-side app and your server-side exceptions with session replay and exception monitoring; i.e. if an error happened in a server-side app, we would make it easy (with session replay) to trace all the steps that a user took leading up to it. Especially for larger companies using highlight.io, the request to tie in logs came up repeatedly, and we wanted to build this with the same philosophy in mind. Now, you'll see client-side and server-side logs all in one place, brought together in the context of a user session, as well as logs in the context of an error. Like the rest of our stack, this project is written in Go and Typescript, and for log ingestion/querying, we're using ClickHouse [2]. Before deciding on ClickHouse, we were planning to use OpenSearch (an aws fork of elasticsearch [3]) for this part of our product, but as our traffic has increased, we encountered quite a few pains with write throughput for OpenSearch. After evaluating a few options, we eventually landed with ClickHouse (their cloud offering was icing on the cake), which has also proven to be much more cost-effective so far. Building with ClickHouse from scratch has been an exciting journey. Eric (the mastermind behind this project) wrote a blog post [4] on a handful of ClickHouse learnings we've gathered since starting the project. With GPT and Generative AI in the news, I decided to chain multiple Al products together to build something really cool. I set my end goal to be: prompt-to-storyboard (aka fun videos generated purely via generative AI). There exists some prompt-to-video products, but I wanted to tell stories with audio as well. The end product takes an initial prompt and produces a series of images and audio files, which I then combine (with subtitles) into the final video. To showcase videos, there is a basic upvote/downvote leaderboard. Text | OpenAI https://openai.com/ Text is generated in a few high-level steps that I ask GPT to work through. These are all based on the initial user prompt, as such (ideally) indirectly controlled by the user. - Create a concept for a movie scene based on the prompt, including the theme and setting - Define each character in the scene - Define how each character looks - Define how each character sounds - Define 'frames' of the storyboard All of this textual information is defined in a JSON object I describe to GPT. I then take GPT's output and build the storyboard with the tools below. Voices | Coqui https://coqui.ai/ From the GPT output, I needed three major pieces of information to build voices in a way that I found satisfying: - Description of the voice - Description of the performance - Text of the actual dialog spoken Coqui has a product called 'prompt-to-voice', where you can describe how a character will sound and a custom voice is made for that character - this is how GPT defines the characters to use in the storyboard. As such, every voice is unique per storyboard. GPT will decide that a certain character is an "older man with a raspy voice", and I'll ask Coqui for that type of voice. In addition to this, in order to describe the performance, GPT outputs a basic emotion to summarize the line of dialog (happy, sad, angry, etc) - this is also sent to Coqui per audio clip generated. Images | Stability AI https://stability.ai/ While I originally setup the storyboard generator to use DALL-E due to already integrating with OpenAl for GPI, I found the cost prohibitive. As such, the images generated for the storyboards are from Stability Al's Stable Diffusion (stable-diffusion-512-v2-1). I combine the description of the frame that GPT provides, in addition to the theme and setting that GPT output for the whole storyboard, to generate each frame. Since GPT controls the data sent to Stable Diffusion with the description of the frame as well as the theme and setting, if your prompt dictates a theme it should hopefully translate into a theme in your storyboard. Both the storyboard and the 'prompt enhanced' image generation in the 'Create Content' tab pre-feed a GPT request with a summary of Stability Al's prompt guide. It will try and pick keyword weights to improve the image, and much like the setting and theme, keywords should be influenced by the initial prompt provided to the product. Conclusion: Have fun and make my 2 weeks of work seem worth it! Uses agent to decide win/loss Yeah... so I know some software development concepts well I haven't written any code in 10 years, so like half the time was just getting a development setup. At first it suggested PyCharm and honestly it wasted a lot of time. Eventually I got VS Code and GPT just seems to understand it so much better. The real secret to getting good responses with GPT-4 during this I found is to restart the conversation fresh with a complete description of what you need (2-3 paragraphs of detail is great) and the rest as code. [detailed description of what you need, make sure it's detailed and specific add examples if possible] #### [insert all the code, the more you can fit the better] That first code block it gives you back on the first output is the cleanest by far. If there is an error and you submit it back in the same chat conversation, it just gets diluted/saturated over time, hallucinations go up etc. So if there is a bug rather than continue in the same convo, repeat this process in a brand new conversation. Each time it gives a much cleaner, fresher look at the code and goals needed. If your codeblock is really small then this isn't so important, but I'm trying to maximize the amount of code per prompt for best responses. I also make sure to split files by concerns so they don't get too big for the prompt window otherwise it's annoying. #### And lastly the other interesting thing about this project is this simulates an Agent loop where it is constantly trying to determine if the player won or lost, decide what the next most cohesive step is based on the human feedback (click emoji) and looping it. Actually that was my main interest for the project and I just wanted to get something published as a secondary goal. It only has a single required item in the spec, a freeform description field. The operator will use chatgpt to generate a spec, then immediately apply it to the cluster. It makes some attempt to correct errors if there's a problem with the syntax. It will leave additional comments, questions or instructions in the status field of the object. I built this in a weekend and it's still quite unrefined. It's in no way production ready, please don't use it for anything real, but it works better than you would think, considering how simple it is. If you're going to use it, run it on a local cluster like 'kind'. Some descriptions to try: * install a redis namespace with a redis cluster and a service in it * create an argocd application in the argocd namespace to install velero. * write a python script that lists all ec2 instances in us-east-1, and run it as a k8s job with the aws credentials already saved in the default namespace.. a somewhat longer description that also worked: given the following spec: --- kind: MagicHappens apiVersion: gptmagic.io/v1 metadata: name: foo spec: description: this is a freeform description field that will be sent to chatgpt to generate kubernetes resources dryRun: false --- Can you create more magic happens resources, each of which describes an argocd application that needs to be created to install a helm chart for one of the standard cluster addons that need to be installed on a cluster for it to be production ready. The description should be be freeform text like the following: "Create an argocd application in the argocd namespace to install istio from the helm chart with all the defaults" or "Create an argocd application in the argocd namespace to install prometheus and grafana, with an ingress enabled for grafana". Be very thorough and included as many apps that might be needed for a prod ready cluster using industry standard CNCF projects if possible. (this produces a list of additional resources for the operator, which the operator then goes on to create argocd applications for -- it also left comments with instructions on one of the resources for how configure it to work with your cloud provider something to note is that since you can run arbitrary containers with arbitrary commands, and chatgpt can write arbitrary code, you don't have to limit yourself to k8s stuff.. if you've got saas credentials on the cluster, you can just tell it to run a python script as a job to do whatever you want. Since most people are cowards, there's a dryRun field that defaults to true, so it only attaches the spec to the object. Since 3.5 is much cheaper, I've opened up the question generation for everybody. - I built a prompt comparison tool so I could tweak the prompt to get better responses. - I've added some more data to the questions. This includes a more free form explanation to the correct answer (separate from the references), and categories for all questions. - I've been working on a question improvement process. This means I collect issues, generate new variations of the question and let people vote on them. Voting and question improvement is currently only available to signed in users. I've always been a fan of the theory of six degree of separation, but it's an overused concept when exploring the Wiki-graph. Instead of showing the shortest path, which in my opinion is "boring" and ends up connecting super-important central articles, I came up with my own method: WikiBinge selects the smaller, less represented articles on Wikipedia. In a WikiBinge path, the underdogs are the kings! How does it work? It's pretty straightforward! Compute PageRank on the Wiki-graph and assign as weight of each edge the PageRank value of the destination node. A WikiBinge path is then simply a shortest path using these weights: the algorithm will then favor paths passing through articles with lower PageRank values. This spreadsheet does not attempt to compete with a typical FIRE spreadsheet or tools like YNAB/Mint, it is about capturing the big picture once a month and essentially taking a snapshot of my financial health. Show HN: GPT–LLM native macOS app with time travel, versioning, search Hey everyone! I made a Mac app for exploring large language models. It’s fast, small, has a tiny memory footprint. It’s immutable by design with both immediate time travel and automatic versioning as foundational elements. The app is written in Swift and a bit of Rust for the tokenizer. I used SwiftUI for structure and animations and Cocoa for advanced behavior. All storage is SQLite and local-only. You can go through the database as needed and backup it as well. The app has support for variants, which is the `n` parameter in the OpenAI chat completion API—equivalent to the drafts feature in Bard. It shows model- and ChatML-aware tokens and cost, and it dynamically adjusts response length in function of prompt length and context length. It supports hiding runs that are not useful, marking the ones that are notable, and going through the ancestry of the current run. It also has support for examples, as specified in ChatML, conversation names and personal and local-only notes. The full-text search works across all stored text and it has support for `all`, `any`, `prefix` and `phrase` matching; the results are time-ordered rather than ranked for the time being. There are several shortcuts and more are coming so that the app can be used entirely by keyboard. You can export to JSON and all data is exported. The app is sandboxed and notarized. The API keys are stored securely in the Keychain. Next I plan to implement combinatorial runs (mixing multiple values of the same parameter and multiple models as well) and full Markdown support. Currently only OpenAI’s conversational models are supported (GPT 3.5, GPT 4 8K, GPT 4 32K), but I’ll be adding support for local models and custom ChatML endpoints as soon as possible. Give it a try. Show HN: Skip the SSO Tax, access your user data with OSS As the former CTO of an Insurtech and Fintech startup I always had the “pleasure” to keep regulators and auditors happy. Think of documenting who has access to what, quarterly access reviews, yearly audits and so on… Like many others we couldn’t justify the Enterprise-plan for every SaaS tool to simply get access to SSO and SCIM/SAML APIs. For Notion alone the cost would have nearly doubled to $14 per user per month. That’s insane! Mostly unknown to people, SSO Tax also limits access to APIs that are used for managing user access (SCIM/SAML). This has proven to be an incredibly annoying roadblock that prevented me from doing anything useful with our user data: - You want to download the current list of users and their permissions? Forget about it! - You want to centrally assign user roles and permissions? Good luck with that! - You want to delete user accounts immediately? Yeah right, like that's ever gonna happen! It literally cost me hours to update our access matrix at the end of every quarter for our access reviews and manually assigning user accounts and permissions. I figured, there must be a better way than praying to the SaaS gods to miraculously make the SSO Tax disappear (and open up SCIM/SAML along the way). That’s why I sat down a few weeks ago and started building OpenOwl ( https://ift.tt/8fdiHt2 ). It allows me to just plug in my user credentials and automatically download user lists, including permissions from SaaS tools. Granted, OpenOwl is still a work in progress, and it's not perfect. At the moment it's limited to non-SSO login flows and covers only 7 SaaS vendors. My favorite part is that you can configure integrations as “recipes”. The goal was for anybody to be able to add new integrations (IT managers and developers alike). Therefore you ideally don’t even have to write any new code, just tell OpenOwl how the new SaaS vendor works. What do you think? Show HN: Sym, define just-in-time access workflows in code Hello HN, My cofounder (jon918) and I started Sym three years ago because we were frustrated with how hard it was to manage access to cloud infrastructure. We wanted to build a tool for JIT access that was actually designed for developers. We were wary of tools that tried to accommodate both devs and IT but ended up with usability compromises for both. First, we figured no one wants another web app to log into so we let administrators define access workflows in Terraform and let developers request and gain access via Slack. That seemed to pay off: being code-based was a big plus for our early customers since it let them manage the logic in version control and test in CI/CD. Second, we knew that updating permissions/roles/access was a major source of toil and risk in the world of cloud infrastructure. Have you ever tried to avoid annoying, persistent access requests by setting policies that are a bit more permissive than you’d like? We felt that fully automated just-in-time access + approvals could really help here. But we also knew that a simple approval tool could end up leading to request fatigue - kind of defeating the purpose. So we built an SDK to let you define checks in code (e.g. pagerduty.on_call, okta.is_user_in_group, github.get_repo_collaborators) in order to dynamically route requests or fast-track access when appropriate. This seems to be paying off: users are creating Slack-based approvals in front of different types of risky actions like production access, sensitive queries and triggering Lambdas. Show HN: The Future of Data APIs Hello everyone, I'm Matteo, and, over the last few months, I have been working with my co-founder and other folks from Goldman Sachs, Netflix, Palantir, and DBS Bank to simplify building data APIs. I have personally faced this problem myself multiple times, but, the inspiration to create a company out of it really came from this Netflix article (https://ift.tt/0R9BugM). You know the story: you have tons of data locked in your data platform and RDBMS and suddenly, a PM asks to integrate this data with your customer-facing app. Obviously, all in real-time. And the pain begins! You have to set up infrastructure to move and process the data in real-time (Kafka, Spark, Flink), provision a solid caching/serving layer, build APIs on top and, only at the end of all this, you can start integrating data with your mobile or web app! As if all this is not enough, because you are now serving data to customers, you have to put in place all the monitoring and recovery tools, just in case something goes wrong. There must be an easier way !!!!! That is what drove us to build Dozer. Dozer is a simple open-source Data APIs backend that allows you to source data in real-time from databases, data warehouses, files, etc., process it using SQL, store all the results in a caching layer, and automatically provide gRPC and REST APIs. Everything with just a bunch of SQL and YAML files. In Dozer everything happens in real-time: we subscribe to CDC sources (i.e. Postgres CDC, Snowflake table streams, etc.), process all events using our Reactive SQL engine, and store the results in the cache. The advantage is that data in the serving layer is always pre-aggregated, and fresh, which helps us to guarantee constant low latency. We are at a very early stage, but Dozer can already be downloaded from our GitHub repo (https://ift.tt/9HLvPiu). We have taken the decision to build it entirely in Rust, which gives us the ridiculous performance and the beauty of a self-contained binary. We are now working on several features like cloud deployment, blue/green deployment of caches, data actions (aka real-time triggers in Typescript/Python), a nice UI, and many others. Show HN: Want something better than k-means? Try BanditPAM Want something better than k-means? I'm happy to announce our SOTA k-medoids algorithm from NeurIPS 2020, BanditPAM, is now publicly available! `pip install banditpam` or `install.packages("banditpam")` and you're good to go! k-means is one of the most widely-used algorithms to cluster data. However, it has several limitations: a) it requires the use of L2 distance for efficient clustering, which also b) restricts the data you're clustering to be vectors, and c) doesn't require the means to be datapoints in the dataset. Unlike in k-means, the k-medoids problem requires cluster centers to be actual datapoints, which permits greater interpretability of your cluster centers. k-medoids also works better with arbitrary distance metrics, so your clustering can be more robust to outliers if you're using metrics like L1. Despite these advantages, most people don't use k-medoids because prior algorithms were too slow. In our NeurIPS 2020 paper, BanditPAM, we sped up the best known algorithm from O(n^2) to O(nlogn) by using techniques from multi-armed bandits. We were inspired by prior research that demonstrated many algorithms can be sped up by sampling the data intelligently, instead of performing exhaustive computations. We've released our implementation, which is pip- and CRAN-installable. It's written in C++ for speed, but callable from Python and R. It also supports parallelization and intelligent caching at no extra complexity to end users. Its interface also matches the sklearn.cluster.KMeans interface, so minimal changes are necessary to existing code. Basically turns your JSON into a query-able, hosted database in seconds. You can read/update/delete JSON files by path, just like you would in Javascript. So, something like get(”users[7].address”) And while we’re at it, I also built a simple file storage service where you upload a file and it gives you the URL back. A lot of my (and other devs friends') side projects will never require more data than a JSON file can handle. Yet we always have to go through the hoops of setting up and using databases meant to handle huge amounts of data. There are many other services that could benefit from the same minimalist philosophy. The idea is to have a bunch of building blocks of different services, and let the developer scale up/down the complexity as they see fit. Still early/experimental but there are quite a few concepts I'm excited about here. This project came about while writing a program in Go and loving its approach to concurrency. Being a long-time Rubyist I immediately started to think about what similar concepts might look like in Ruby. I set out with two main design constraints: 1. Lightweight: I didn't want routines to be backed by fibers or threads. Having been involved some in the async project ( https://ift.tt/fn0jLov ), I had some experience using fibers for concurrency but was curious if they could be avoided. 2. Explicitness: Routine behavior must be written to describe exactly how it is to behave. I always felt like concurrent code was hard to fully understand because of the indirection involved. On the spectrum between tedium and magical I wanted to err more on the side of tedium with Goru. Goru routines are just blocks that are called once for every tick of the reactor. It is up to the developer to implement behavior in terms of a state machine, where on each tick the routine takes some action and then updates the state of the routine for the next tick. This fulfills both design constraints: 1. Because routines are just blocks, they weigh in at about ~345 bytes of memory overhead. 2. Routine behavior is explicit because it is written as a state machine inside the block. Couple more features worth noting: * Goru includes channels for buffered reading/writing (similar to channels in Go). * Goru ships with primitives for non-blocking IO to easily build things like http servers. Bought a few books, tried all the websites and apps I found. This serious study helped a lot in understanding the game better, but didn’t improve my results as much as I hoped. It also was very hard work, and after a few months I stopped having the motivation to continue. Around that time I discovered Puzzle Rush on chess.com; that one was the most enjoyable chess-related thing I could do besides playing games, and it helped with tactics, but I soon plateaued - until I thought about combining that with spaced repetitions. I would manually review the puzzles I had failed, and add them to a rudimentary spaced repetitions system I had hacked together. It was a bit of work, but still enjoyable enough to stick to it; that’s when I started getting noticeably better and better, making fewer blunders, and climbing the rating. Late last year I decided to take some time off after leaving my last job; during the break I felt an itch and decided to create a website which would allow anybody to use the same technique I described above, but in a much easier/integrated way. Show HN: AI Shakespeare These days thinking of ways to uniquely show off a text to speech model is tough, as there are a lot of them out there. We thought it would be fun for April 1 to show something a bit on the silly end of things -- we trained our TTS model on "Shakespearean" theatrical voices, and used GPT to generate short plays which are then "acted" out. This lets us show the versatility of our model, that we use in more "serious" settings for generating branded voices for particular languages or accents. It should be noted, the dataset is of our own curation; all voice actors were compensated with full knowledge of being used for TTS and were thrilled to be part of a creative project like this. Show HN: Coursemate, connect with other self learners Hey Hacker News! My name is Collin, 18 years old and doing a gap year after finishing high school last year. This was my first real project after starting to learn web development around 5 months ago. I came up with this idea as it was a real pain for me to find other people from my country and especially my age, learning and taking online courses about the same stuff online. Lots of these online courses include their own discord communities and forums, but I still found it very hard to connect with other people in there. Thats why I built Coursemate.
